Aviary, Setting Digital Artists Aflight
June 27, 2008
Aviary is an exciting new Rich Internet Application that offers powerful and free(for now) suite of creative tools. I got my invitation today and started using Phoenix (a bitmap image editor) and Peacock (Computer algorithm-based pattern generator).

The user interface is beautiful and easy to use. I could tell that allot of thought went into designing a pleasing environment.
from their site:
All of our tools are based right in your browser or as downloadable AIR applications. Our tools all communicate and relate to each other. To illustrate an example: You can import a swatch from Toucan into Phoenix, while doing complex bitmap processing of a 3D object developed in Hummingbird. Finally, you can take your finished artwork and lay it out in Owl as the DVD artwork for a music CD you and your friends put together in Roc and Myna and offer it for sale in our marketplace, Hawk.
I don’t think this will be a photoshop killer. These applications are powerful, but cannot easily pull me away from my comfortable CS3 work flows. Yet, I highly recommend checking them out. During the hour I spent playing, I could feel my mind breaking out of it’s creative routine.
It’s Social!
Aviary also offers the ability to share and collaborate with others. This feature alone has the potential to change the way artists work. Many people that are new to digital image creation will find these apps fun and easy to use.
Have you had a chance to try it? If you are interested in an invitation to the beta, let me know and I’ll send you one.
